Normally, the week after Labor Day is a short week when the world is getting back to its groove—summer vacations are over, kids are fully back at school, offices get busy, and the old routine is back. Well, this year, the work world came back to a new normal—the “Monday not in the office” is not uncommon across most cities in the US as “structured hybrid work” cements itself as the new normal.
From WFH to Structured Hybrid
The data trend is clear—after a big spike during the pandemic of predominantly work-from-home (WFH), the average time spent in the “office” is 2/3rd of the time spent at “home,” and it seems to have stabilized over the last 18-24 months.

As I said in my first blog, there is no going back to 5-days a week “in the office” as work is from anywhere.
“Structured hybrid” is a balanced approach when employees structure their work arrangements to maximize their office visits and allow for flexibility to work remotely on specific days.
While hybrid work is now the most common type of working arrangement, there are still many challenges to making it fully productive. One is the so-called “coordination tax,” which is the time spent working around the logistics of meeting with people you need when some are working in person and others are working virtually.
But it’s still not easy and simple for cross-functional teams of people from different departments working on the same project to structure their hybrid work plan. It’s also stifling workers’ opportunities for connection, mentorship, and collaboration with people in different parts of their organizations — a key goal of returning to in-person work.
